Chronic under-funding threatenes the future of arts education in our public school systems. Many local school students receive little or no arts eduction in the course of a typical school day. Studies have shown that arts eduction plays an important role in the teaching and learning of many skills and concepts among school aged children. The benefits of such a curriculum extend beyond self-expression and creativity, and help students develop critical thinking and basic reasoning. In fact, an arts based eduction has been shown to: 1. Develop analytical and problem-solving skills* High Desert Living Arts Center feels strongly that arts curriculum is developmentally necessary for children and that all children should have access to art classes regularly. To this end, HDLAC has implemented our After-school Art Program in several local schools in the Morongo Unified School District, with more being added continuously. Students are invited to attend a special session taught by HDALC teachers. The typical cost of a class is no more than $5. But, as with all HDLAC programs, a sizeable portion of these classes are made up of full scholarship students who might not otherwise have access to such opportunities. We encourage parents to ask about HDLAC’s After-school Art Program at your child’s school. Living Arts Gallery hosts regular seminars for teachers to learn how they can provide art classes at their schools. Our goal is to provide after-school programs at as many of our local public schools as possible. More information on this unique seminar is available at the Living Arts Gallery in Yucca Valley.
